What Is Moxibustion?
Moxibustion (or moxa) is a therapeutic method of classical Chinese medicine, using a herb made from common mugwort (artemisia vulgaris) used to heat up certain acupuncture points, to nourish and build qi and Blood, and to enhance the effect of our work on all levels. We also use moxa techniques in order to treat symptoms such as joint pain, and tight musculature. It has been a part of acupuncture practice for at least 2500 years. It is very complimentary to acupuncture so where appropriate it may be incorporated into your treatment.

How Does It Work?
Moxa can be applied in a variety of different ways to enhance its effect.
Direct moxa is when the dried herb is rolled into a cone and applied above an acupuncture point on the skin. It is then lit to provide a more focused heat and stimulation of the acupuncture point.
Indirect moxibustion means that the moxa is burnt near the skin to create heat but the moxa is not directly touching the skin. This is a safer method that is often prescribed to aid the turning of breech babies using a moxa stick. Moxa can also be applied to the end of a needle to help warm joints and larger areas where cones would be too large to manage.
The scent of moxa is very distinct and many people find it to have a therapeutic and relaxing aroma.
