What Is Kinesio Taping?

The Kinesio Taping Method is a therapeutic taping technique, not only offering the patient or athlete the support they are looking for, but also actually rehabilitating the affected condition as well.

The Kinesio® Tex Taping method is a new and effective treatment for lymphoedema reduction, muscle disorders and joint dysfunction. It is used extensively in Europe, America and Asia, and is now being introduced to the UK.

How Does It Work?

The technique uses a special adhesive, highly elastic, latex free cotton tape. Used with Kinesio® Taping applications, it can greatly aid flow of lymphatic fluid, muscle disorders and joint dysfunction – alleviating pain, enhancing performance, and facilitating rehabilitation. It encourages full bio-mechanical range of movement whilst relieving lymphatic congestion to the distressed areas, which enhances the body’s natural healing process.

Kinesio Tex tape can be worn 24 hours a day for up to 5 days due to its breathable cotton fabric.

It is greatly used in the world of sports and now making its way into Europe. It is very different from regular taping techniques as it allows the athlete to continue with activity. This is done through specific tape application by the practitioner.

How Was It Discovered?

The Kinesio® Taping Method was developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase nearly 25 years ago in Japan, a chiropractor, he designed his own method of taping to assist the body further with traumatised tissue.

Regular taped provided support but he wanted to use a tape that reflected the skin and muscles. In 1973 he developed Kinesio® Tex and the Kinesio Taping method. After receiving exposure in the Seoul Olympics as it was worn by several Japanese athletes it reached the UK in 2004.

Physiological Effects of Kinesio Tex Taping:

  • Relieves pain by activating the natural analgesic system in our skin receptors
  • Supports muscles in movement reducing stress, fatigue and spasm
  • Re-educate muscles through sensory feedback
  • In turn improving muscle performance
  • Lessen swelling (edema) assisting the lymphatic system in its natural process
  • Removes lymphatic fluid congestion
  • Corrects joint mechanics through improved muscle function and stability
  • Assists in positioning a muscle or joint into proper position for rehabilitation
  • Assists a weak muscle by improved contraction
  • Improves kinesthetic awareness of posture and alignment
  • Can improve the appearance of scars by reducing adhesions and pitting, softening , flattening, and improved pliability
  • Minimize post-traumatic injury and improve rehabilitation through improved circulation
